Home Language (non-curriculum) MFL GCSEs

We are proud that as a school we have a diverse range of students, many of whom can and do speak another language at home. If this includes your child, then we may be able to offer them the opportunity to gain an additional GCSE in your home language!

What do you need to be able to do to get an extra GCSE for your child?
  • They must be able to read and write in your language (e.g. Arabic)
  • They must be able to have full conversation with another person (the examiner) in your language
  • There must be a GCSE available for your language
How can The Cottesloe School support your child?

If you would like your child to do a GCSE in your home language, we need a lot of time to arrange this. The first thing is that we need your permission to enter your child for the GCSE.

You will need to email Miss Hall, the Exams Officer, BEFORE the end of October to request that your child does an additional GCSE. Any later than that, we may not be able to find someone to conduct the speaking part of the GCSE.

If we can find an examiner, we will then contact you with important information such as when your child’s speaking, listening, reading and writing exams are, and if there are any additional costs.

What you need to do BEFORE contacting the school:
  1. Check that there is a GCSE in your language. You can find this out with a quick Google search.
  2. Consider carefully how old your child is. We don’t recommend doing a GCSE before Year 10; the earliest we suggest you contact the school is September, the year in which your child is in Year 10.
  3. We do not offer any lessons or tutoring – can your child speak, read and write in your language without any help?

If you have read all the information above, and would like to arrange to do an additional GCSE in your home language, please contact the school exams officer.

You must have submitted your request before the end of October, or we may not be able to find an examiner in time for the exams in May.
