At The Cottesloe School we have a strong desire to recognise and respond to the needs of our students and educate them to become fulfilled, successful and safe members of society. The PSHCE curriculum is designed with this ethos at the very heart of it. Each year students are invited to input their thoughts into the curriculum structure, along with the use of CHIMAT data from local health authorities, guidance from the Thames Valley Police newsletter for schools, and the statutory requirements for both PSHCE and RSE. All of this aids us to write a bespoke and evolving curriculum that suits the educational needs of our students at that specific time.
At The Cottesloe, School students are taught PSHCE each week, in one-hour lessons with their tutor groups and predominantly with their form tutor.
We have a spiral curriculum building upon concepts covered throughout the years, ensuring that all resources used are age and maturity-level-appropriate and accredited by the PSHCE association, with whom I work very closely. The concepts covered fall under three main themes: Health and Wellbeing, Wider World and Relationships. Over a whole academic year, each year group visits each key theme twice, covering different aspects of the theme.
Our PSHCE curriculum roadmaps have been updated to reflect the current needs of our students. The roadmaps provide details of what is being taught in each year group and examples of the accredited resources used by staff.
