Subject Content

Offering an effective introduction to the health and social care sector, this qualification looks at the role the sector plays in the health, well-being and care of individuals. It also introduces students to knowledge and skills needed to work in various care settings. 

Underpinning the qualification is a focus on person-centred values, rights of individuals, communicating effectively and protecting individuals. Also, supporting individuals through life events and the option to plan and deliver a creative activity or a health promotion campaign. 

The qualification is designed to help students learn practical skills that can be applied to real-life contexts and work situations, to think creatively, analytically, logically and critically and develop independence and confidence in using skills that would be relevant to the health and social care sector and more widely

Students will study the following units:

  • Principles of health and social care - externally assessed
  • Anatomy and physiology for health and social care - externally assessed
  • Person-centred approach to care - non-examined assessment
  • Supporting people with mental health conditions - non-examined assessment

Two non-examined optional units will be chosen from the following (options to be confirmed):

  • Supporting people with long term physiological conditions 
  • Investigating public health
  • Supporting people in relation to sexual health, pregnancy and postnatal health
  • Supporting healthy nutrition and lifestyles

Assessment Details

Cambridge Advanced Nationals are assessed using the Pass, Merit, Distinction, and Distinction* grading scale.

Assessment comprises of:

  • externally assessed units, which focus on subject knowledge and understanding  - 40% of final grade
  • applied or practical non-exam assessment units (NEA) - 60% of final grade

  • Students will also need the course textbook.

What can I do to support my child at home?

  • Take an interest in the topics that students are studying and discuss this with them.
  • Help students to meet the assignment deadlines.
  • Knowledge is the backbone of success in the externally assessed modules, helps students to ‘learn’ content through questioning, helping them produce revision material/cards.
  • Facilitate time for them to undertake pressure/timed practice at home so that they can develop a fluent exam technique.
  • Help them to keep organised as this is the key to accessing the highest grades.
