The Level 3 Diploma in Financial Studies (DipFS) provides students with an in-depth understanding of personal finance and the wider financial system. The course covers four key areas:
- Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short Term
- Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term
- Sustainability of an Individual’s Finances
- Sustainability of the Financial Services System
Students develop knowledge and skills in budgeting, saving, borrowing, financial planning and decision-making, alongside an understanding of how economic and ethical factors influence financial products and services.
Assessment Details
The course is assessed through a combination of written examinations and internally assessed coursework. Assessments involve short-answer questions, case study analysis, essay-writing, data response tasks and financial calculations.
To be successful, students will need to be able to:
Students of Financial Studies make frequent use of real-world data, case studies and models to help them examine financial decision-making and topical issues. Due to the varied nature of the subject, lessons are diverse and will at times involve debates, essay-writing, analysing financial products, mathematical exercises, teacher-led instruction and practical simulations.
Private study outside the classroom will involve practising financial calculations, completing homework exercises, revising key content, reading finance-related articles and keeping up-to-date with developments in banking, saving, borrowing and investment.
What can I do to support my child at home?
Share real-world examples of financial decision-making, such as budgeting, comparing savings accounts or managing household expenses. Ask what topic they are studying and discuss how you or your workplace apply financial concepts — this will help them contextualise their learning.
Encourage them to watch the news, read finance blogs or websites such as BBC Business and MoneySavingExpert, and discuss current financial and economic issues.
