Academic Interventions and Support

Alongside our universal offer that places high quality teaching, including the ability to adapt practices to meet the needs of the students, we have in place a number of academic support interventions.

KS3 Back to Basics Interventions

For those students in Years 7, 8 and 9 who need additional support with their reading, writing, numeracy or have English as an additional language, we offer specific interventions to develop their skills in these areas:

Reading support: we use Lexia to target students who have been identified as needing additional support with their reading.

Writing support: we use a three-stage approach to develop students’ handwriting skills or where a Chromebook is more suitable for their needs. The three stages are:

  1. Handwriting practice to develop letter formation and sizing of letters
  2. Touch typing support to develop speed of typing and use of the keyboard
  3. Occupational therapy techniques to strengthen dexterity and grip

Numeracy support: we use the timestable feature on Sparx Maths that helps build fluency and confidence with multiplication facts.

EAL (English as an Additional Language) support: our EAL intervention develops English language skills that will help students access their learning, promote social integration and foster confidence and independence in learning.

KS4 Support

Most of our students study nine subjects in Key Stage 4. For some students, we realise that this may not be suitable and therefore, where our eligibility criteria is met, we can tailor students’ curriculum offers to meet their needs.

This can be in the form of a student not completing as many option subjects at Level 2 alongside the core curriculum. For these students, they may be timetabled in our Learning Support Room (LSR) so that they can spend additional time studying for the qualifications they are undertaking or work on specific targeted interventions to support them. We also offer a range of alternative qualifications such as ASDAN courses and Functional Skills Level 1 and Level 2.

Enhanced Tuition

Enhanced Tuition aims to support pupils by providing targeted academic assistance to help them excel in their studies and achieve their academic goals in Maths and Science. Focusing on 1:1 support or small group interventions, students are timetabled a weekly 30 or 60-minute slots. Progress is reviewed every 6 weeks.

Curriculum-based interventions

Following assessment points throughout the academic year, our curriculum teams offer targeted interventions to specific students to help them achieve their academic goals. These interventions are timetabled and shared with families as part of our academic offer.

Quiet Study Rooms

In Year 11, our students are invited to make use of a designated Quiet Study Room (QSR) that runs every lunchtime throughout the year. A member of staff, often two, is on hand to support students with their studying and revision in this period.

Exam Access Arrangements (EAAs)

Some students do not have a level playing field when it comes to accessing their exams. For this reason, we have a number of adaptations we can put in place so that students are able to reflect their true abilities. All EAAs are recognised by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and reviewed annually.
