Detention Protocol

At The Cottesloe School, our focus is on providing the best possible environment for your child's success, built upon the Cottesloe 6Cs and Healthy Relationships.

We believe that clear structures and proactive support are key to academic progress and overall wellbeing. As part of our updated Behaviour for Learning Policy, our detention system is designed to provide structured support and opportunities for reflection. Our focus ensures that we prioritise proactive intervention and celebrate student successes.

Notifications & Attendance

All detention notifications will be sent directly to you via the My Child at School App (MCAS).

  • Need Help? If you require support installing this application, please visit the MCAS section of the school website.
  • Absence: If a student is absent from school on the day of a detention, the sanction will be automatically rescheduled.
  • Unable to Attend: If your child is unable to attend a scheduled detention for another valid reason, please contact your child’s Head of Year before the day of detention.
  • Please be aware that the school reserves the right to escalate the sanction if the reason for absence is not deemed valid.

Immediate Sanctions: Lesson Removal (B3 - Parking)

This protocol addresses instances where a student is removed from a lesson to ensure learning can continue for others.

  • Sanction: A single B3 incident will result in an automatic lunchtime detention on the next school day.
  • Escalation: More severe or multiple B3 incidents will be addressed with escalating sanctions, as outlined in the light blue boxes of the full protocol (provided separately).
  • Logistics: Lunchtime detentions take place every school day in the hall.

Weekly Accumulation of Behaviour Points and Lates

This protocol tracks the total number of low-level behaviour incidents (B1s and B2s) and lates to lessons.

  • Tracking Period: The count runs weekly, from Monday to Friday.
  • Sanction Schedule: Sanctions resulting from these totals (as seen in the red boxes of the protocol) are scheduled and implemented during the following week.
  • Logistics: After-School Detentions take place on Mondays and Wednesdays in the hall.
  • Scope: Accumulation sanctions do not include B3s, B4s, or B5s. Additionally, accumulation of detentions focus on lesson lateness; lateness to school is managed via a separate procedure.

Communication with Home

We are committed to keeping you informed about your child's conduct.

  • B3, B4, or above: Staff will contact home directly.
  • B1s and B2s: Information is provided via the MCAS app.
  • Contextual Information: If you would like more context regarding specific B1s and B2s, please contact the relevant classroom teacher.

We look forward to working together to maintain a positive and successful learning environment for all our students; we value our partnership with you as we work towards this goal.
