Spanish
Intent
At The Cottesloe School, our Spanish curriculum gives students of all abilities the confidence to communicate, the resilience to tackle complex challenges, and a deep appreciation for the Spanish-speaking world.
We encourage students to look beyond Eurocentric borders, recognising Spanish as a vital, globally useful language in a truly international society.
The Three Pillars of Learning
Our curriculum is built on three foundational pillars:
- Vocab: Learning topic-specific words and expressions that build up across KS3 and KS4 to help you talk about the world around you.
- Grammar: Putting sentences together using increasingly complex tenses and sentence structures. Grammar liberates your language!
- Phonics: Mastering pronunciation and how sounds match up to spellings so you can read and speak with confidence.
These three things are embedded across the KS3 curriculum to set students on a pathway to success at GCSE where these skills are enhanced and tested more rigorously in examinations.
What Students Achieve
- Resilience and Rigor: Gradual progression builds the stamina needed to excel at GCSE and beyond.
- Transferable Skills: Students master problem-solving, active listening, and confident opinion-forming.
- Cultural Capital: An authentic insight into diverse Hispanic cultures fosters lifelong global awareness and respect.
By the end of their MFL journey, students leave equipped with a powerful linguistic skillset that opens doors to further study, global employment, and life as confident world citizens.
Ethos
Department Ethos: The Language Journey
In the languages department at The Cottesloe School, we believe you reap what you sow. Becoming a confident, fluent linguist takes time, effort, and perseverance. Fluency doesn't happen overnight; it requires patience to secure your foundations and grow your vocabulary year on year.
We embrace the learning process together:
- A Stepped Approach: We build skills securely over time, embedding core GCSE skills into the KS3 curriculum so learners are fully prepared for the exam years.
- Problem-Solving & Collaboration: We learn from each other, tackling common errors and misconceptions collaboratively as a whole class when checking understanding.
- Growing Together: Mistakes here are expected, inspected, and respected!
By learning and making mistakes, together, we become more tolerant, resilient, collaborative, and, above all, better communicators.
That’s how you master a language. We hope you’ll learn with us, and maybe even have some fun along the way!
