Labour Market Information (LMI) and Regional Skills Updates

Making informed career choices is like building a successful future and Labour Market Information (LMI) is your primary toolbox!

LMI goes beyond showing what jobs exist today. It provides actionable insights into the past, present, and future of the job market. Understanding this data empowers smart, future-proof career planning by highlighting local growth sectors, entry pathways, and the essential skills employers are seeking.

The Evolving World of Work

The job market is moving faster than ever. As today's students enter the workforce, traditional career trajectories are shifting:
  • Frequent Career Transitions: The average person is now likely to have around 9 different jobs in their lifetime and make 3 to 7 major career changes.

  • Rapid Skill Evolution: Because of advances in technology, automation, and AI, 40% of the skills required for jobs today will change by 2040.

  • A New Perspective: Instead of just asking, "What job do I want?", students should ask, "What skills will enable me to thrive in a world where jobs continually evolve?".

Priority Growth Sectors in Buckinghamshire

The Buckinghamshire Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP)—a 3-year blueprint aligning post-16 education directly with employer needs—has identified five key priority growth sectors across our region:
  1. Health and Social Care: Buckinghamshire’s largest employment sector (employing over 31,000 people), with high demand for care, social work, and specialised health roles.
  2. High-Performance Engineering & Manufacturing: Employing over 28,000 people across the county, centred around world-class hubs like the Silverstone Technology Cluster.
  3. Digital Technology: A rapidly expanding sector with high demand for software developers, data analysts, cybersecurity experts, and AI capability.
  4. Film and High-End TV (HETV): A world-renowned creative cluster supported by major local developments at Pinewood Studios and Marlow Film Studios.
  5. Construction & Green Infrastructure: Driven by major infrastructure projects (including HS2 and East-West Rail) alongside local housing targets and net-zero retrofitting.

Specialised Local Clusters

Buckinghamshire is uniquely positioned with world-leading centres of excellence right on our doorstep:

  • Silverstone: High-Performance Engineering, Motorsport, and Advanced Manufacturing.
  • Westcott Space Cluster: Satellite Applications, Drone Technology, and Propulsion Testing.
  • Pinewood Studios & Creative Hubs: Film, TV, Virtual Production, and VFX.

Core Skills Employers Want

Across all priority sectors, local employers are looking for more than just technical qualifications. The LSIP highlights four primary cross-sector skill priorities:
  • Work-Readiness & Professional Skills: Essential workplace capabilities, including clear communication, teamwork, resilience, punctuality, problem-solving, and adaptability.
  • Digital & AI Literacy: Confidence with foundational software, data analysis, and an understanding of how AI tools can be ethically applied in the workplace.
  • Management & Leadership: People management, coaching, strategic decision-making, and commercial awareness.
  • Green Skills: Awareness of climate adaptation, energy efficiency, and sustainable industry practices.
